Helpful Diabetes Fact Discussion

Each and every single year, more and more people are diagnosed with Diabetes. This chronic illness affects more than 2.2 million people in the UK alone. Let’s have a review of some Diabetes facts.

What exactly is Diabetes?

It is a disease wherein the body cannot suitably produce and respond to insulin. What results is an abnormal metabolism along with higher existence of glucose in the blood.

There are Two Types of Diabetes

Type 1

This particular type usually accounts for about 10 to 20% of the collective number of people with Diabetes. Type 1 is often referred to as: insulin dependent and juvenile diabetes. This type usually affects children but can also manifest in adults.

Type 1 is believed to be caused by the body’s immune system. The immune system ends up attacking the cells that normally produce insulin within the pancreas. As the body’s insulin levels drop, the number of glucose rises considerably.

Presently, there is no cure for Type 1 diabetes. Therefore, those diagnosed with this type of diabetes need to constantly monitor their insulin levels. Having insulin shots at the ready is critical.

Type 2

This is the type of diabetes that affects up to 90% of those diagnosed. This type is commonly referred to as the “non-insulin dependent”. Age and lifestyle choice is often a factor in the development of diabetes.

What’s frustrating about this is that it can be prevented. Type 2 diabetes does not hamper the body’s ability to develop insulin. However, the existence of diabetes in the system lessens the normal amount of insulin produced. Adults over 40 and are overweight are at higher risk for Type 2 Diabetes.

Those that have Type 2 can be treated with diet and exercise. Oral medication is often prescribed to lower the glucose levels if they are found to be excessive. This type of diabetes often runs in families but can be avoided with smart living.
